Community Health

HIV Counselor FILLED
Description:
HIV Counselors provide pre-test counseling, administer the OraQuick Advance Rapid test, and deliver post-test counseling along with results.
Special Qualifications: HIV Counselors must be interested in helping people – both HIV- and HIV+ – get the care they need. Our HIV Counselors touch people from diverse walks of life, so the ability to connect and relate to strangers is critical.
Training: Required training will be arranged by Whitman-Walker’s Division of Community Health. Tentative training dates are October 2010, January 2011, and April 2011.
Training modules include: HIV/AIDS Basics; Outreach; OraQuick Advance Rapid HIV Test; HIV Prevention Counseling; Practice Sessions; Observations.*
Hours: Regular shifts are held at various times/places across the Washington Metropolitan area. Shifts are flexible at about four hours each, and our needs are listed below in order of priority:

  • 1st Highest Priority: Mon-Fri daytime (9:00 am-5:00 pm) shifts at the Elizabeth Taylor Medical Center
  • 2nd High Priority: Thu-Sat late-night testing (7:00 pm-2:00 am) on our Mobile Testing Unit
  • 3rd Low Priority: Mon & Wed evening (5:00 pm-8:00 pm) shifts available at the Elizabeth Taylor Medical Center*
  • 4th Lowest Priority: Weekend daytime shifts on our Mobile Testing Unit*

*Those volunteers with Evening/Weekend availability only are asked to consider non-testing positions in Community Health, as training frequently requires some daytime commitment.

Training/ Administrative Location: Elizabeth Taylor Medical Center (downtown campus)
Minimum Commitment: Six months

Data Entry Specialist
Description:
Data Entry Specialists provide support for Counseling, Testing & Referrals by assisting with the entering of Program Evaluation and Monitoring System (PEMS) data that allows WWC to comply with federal and local mandates and reporting requirements.
Qualifications: Data Entry Specialists should have moderate skill in computer office software. The ability to reads the handwriting of others is a plus.
Training: Required training will be arranged by Whitman-Walker’s Division of Community Health.
Hours: Regular shifts are held at our Elizabeth Taylor Medical Center at various times. Shifts are flexible and we request about four hours each.

Outreach Specialist
Description:
Outreach Specialists provide support for Counseling, Testing & Referrals by engaging community members during mobile/remote testing sessions. Outreach Specialists introduce clients to WWC, and can make referrals to WWC services. Outreach Specialists also introduce potentials clients to our HIV Counseling, Testing and Referral Services, helping people navigate how to get a rapid HIV test with us.
Qualifications: Outreach Specialists should have personality! Also critical is the flexibility to speak to different types of people in different situations, and be able to help connect people to WWC services in a pleasant and thoughtful manner.
Training: Required training will be arranged by Whitman-Walker’s Division of Community Health.
Hours: Regular shifts are held at most of our remote and mobile testing events. Shifts are flexible, and we request about 4 hours each shift.
Training/ Administrative Location: Elizabeth Taylor Medical Center (downtown campus)
Minimum Commitment: Six months, minimum.

Peer Support Group Facilitators

Group Co-Facilitator
Description: To guide and advance group interaction while ensuring safe space.
Special Qualifications: A facilitator should possess life experience or expert knowledge that enables them to understand the group topic.   
Responsibilities: Facilitator is responsible for starting and ending the group on time, contacting group members if group is canceled, and ensuring group members have left the space after the meeting. All groups have two facilitators that attend every meeting and there is WWC staff available for guidance and support.

Training: WWC Facilitation training
Hours: Weekday evenings, 90-120 minute sessions once a week

Minimum Commitment: One Year

One-on-One Peer Counselors
Description: The goal of the Peer Counseling Program is to provide one-on-one peer support for individuals around issues of coming out, relationships, HIV status, gender identity and other areas of concern in which a listening ear and reflective questioning may help the client look into his/her situation. The Peer Counselor can also serve as a resource by providing information pertaining to the Client's concerns.
Special Qualifications: A Peer Counselor should possess life experience that enables them to both support and serve as a source of information for a Peer Client.   
Responsibilities: Peer Counselors are asked to engage in the following:

  • Provide one-on-one peer counseling
  • Provide clients with information and emotional support
  • Deliver services within a context that is culturally sensitive and respectful
  • Meet for one hour sessions with client at least biweekly
  • Attend initial training and monthly supervisions
  • Provide feedback and collaborate with staff, and fellow volunteers

Training: WWC Peer Counseling training and ongoing supervision
Hours: Two-four hours per week
