INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
AT WHITMAN-WALKER CLINIC
Current Opportunities

Following are descriptions of current internships within Whitman-Walker Clinic.

Most internship positions are located at WWC's downtown campus, though opportunities exist at our regional offices-Northern Virginia (Arlington) and the Max Robinson Center (Anacostia).

Ideal candidates for internships are students who:

  • Have a strong interest in and/or experience with HIV/AIDS, gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender (GLBT) health or minority health issues;
  • Are committed to providing reliable, high-quality work;
  • Are prepared to complete program-specific training and attend support/supervisory meetings, as required;
  • Are comfortable working in a diverse environment, especially interacting with people of color, GLBT individuals, people living with HIV/AIDS, etc; and
  • Thrive in a fast-paced deadline driven environment, are able to multitask, and have excellent computer skills (word-processing, database and spreadsheet).

Only those candidates selected for an interview will receive a phone call or email from the supervising staff member. All interns must attend a full-day Basic Training session (before or immediately following start date). Note: Basic Training is held five times per year. For the next date, check our calendar.

Clinical internships

Position title: Nursing intern
Program: The Gay Men’s Health and Wellness Clinic provides confidential testing for sexually transmitted diseases including HIV. Testing is conducted on a walk-in basis for men Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the Elizabeth Taylor Medical Center.
Description: Candidate will perform general nursing functions such as giving shots, pulling blood, running labs and giving results.
Hours per week: Flexible – 10 to 15 hours per week, including Tuesday and Thursday night clinics from 6:00-9:00 pm
Length of commitment: Fall 2007
Academic level: Nursing students
Preferred majors: Nursing
Other requirements and qualifications: General nursing skills, must be able and willing to administer STD swab tests, IM and sub-q injections under nurse mentor's direct supervision and provide STD/HIV education and prevention couseling.
