| "I
am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything,
but still I can do something; and because I cannot do
everything, I will not refuse to do something that I can do."
~Edmund Everett Hale
On behalf of the board of directors, clients and staff, thank
you for your interest in stepping forward to do something. That
something will make a crucial difference in the lives of our
clients. That something will help us provide vital
services to our communities. That something will protect and
improve the health and well-being of our loved ones.
We sincerely appreciate your interest in
joining our Whitman-Walker Clinic (WWC) family—composed
of more than 500 volunteers and nearly 200 staff members—whose
unending commitment and hard work allows us to provide high
quality, compassionate, comprehensive, accessible health care
and community services to thousands of people infected/affected
by HIV/AIDS and to the LGBT community.
"Nothing can dim the light which
shines from within."
~Maya Angelou
Our amazing volunteer community is made
up of individuals whose inner light brightens the lives of
our clients. Without dedicated volunteers, we can’t
provide crucial services to those living with HIV/AIDS and
the LGBT community. Every day we get feedback from clients
telling us how a volunteer or staff member has impacted their
lives and how their lives are enriched by knowing that there
are so many people who care. Every day we get feedback from
WWC staff members telling us how pivotal volunteers are to
not only helping them provide services, but also to simply
brighten their day. Every day, volunteers and staff work collaboratively
to make a crucial difference right here at home.
“We make a living by what we get,
but we make a life by what we give.”
~Winston Churchill
Our
dedicated corps of volunteers come from all walks of life,
but the one thing that all have in common is that they all
give generously of their time, talents, skills and energy.
WWC volunteers provide indispensable administrative, professional
and direct client service; they help keep our offices running
smoothly (administrative and program support), give generously
of their professional talents (i.e., graphic design, writing,
computers, training/facilitation, etc.) and work directly
with clients (serving as physicians, therapists,
patient services, etc.).
"I choose to volunteer my nurse
practitioner services at WWC
because of its reputation and the quality of care given to
HIV
infected individuals. I very much enjoy my time at WWC.
Working with the qualified staff and appreciative clients
gives me a personal sense of gratitude in being able to help
those infected and affected by HIV."
~Howard F. Piller, MSN, FNP

Please take the first step in the most rewarding
journey you will ever take. Those who currently volunteer
at other organizations or have volunteered in the past can
no doubt attest to the fact that volunteering is some of the
most important work that can be done. This is the work that
makes the world a better place, enables you to positively
contribute to and influence what happens right in your own
community, strengthens our connections as human beings and
makes you feel good about yourself.
"I love helping members of our
community to build great
love relationships and happy families. I picked WWC
because I wanted to be of service to the DC LGBT community."

make a crucial difference in the fight against HIV/AIDS and
help us provide vital LGBT health services.
"I decided in 1993 to become a
volunteer for the WWC, because I
believed that I could help someone who was ill with HIV/AIDS,
and
that I could make a small difference in their life by supporting
them
with daily chores and if necessary be of some help if they
became
hospitalized."
~Brigitte Sutherlin
