TRANSGENDER DAY OF REMEMBRANCE
WASHINGTON – Following
is the statement of Don Blanchon, executive director of
Whitman-Walker Clinic, marking the annual Transgender Day
of Remembrance:
“On this 11th annual
Transgender Day of Remembrance Whitman-Walker Clinic remembers
transgender men and women lost to violence and we renew
our commitment to bring high quality and affirming health
care to the transgender community.
“As one of the leading
providers of transgender health care in the region, Whitman-Walker
Clinic is deeply proud of our work. Our transgender clients
can receive hormone therapy with proper monitoring; trans-affirmative
gynecological exams, chest and breast exams and STD screening;
HIV/AIDS specialty care; individual counseling; and referrals
to trans-competent health care providers in the DC metropolitan
area.
“In the last year, hundreds
of transgender men and women have come to Whitman-Walker
for care. They know they will receive the kind of care they
need and deserve. And Whitman-Walker Clinic is committed
to being a medical home for the transgender community.
“We believe that every
transgender man and woman has the right to health care and
the chance to live their lives in the healthiest way possible.
We hope that our efforts to build an inclusive and affirming
community will inspire others to do the same.”
Established in 1978, Whitman-Walker Clinic is a non-profit, community-based provider of health care in the Washington, DC, metropolitan area. Through two sites in the District of Columbia, the Clinic offers primary medical and dental care; mental health and addictions counseling and treatment; HIV education, prevention, and testing; legal services; and medical adherence case management. Whitman-Walker Clinic is committed to meeting the health needs of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community and people living with HIV/AIDS.
