WHITMAN-WALKER CLINIC MARKS
TRANSGENDER DAY OF REMEMBRANCE
WASHINGTON - Following is the statement of Donald Blanchon, chief executive officer of Whitman-Walker Clinic, marking the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance:
“On this ninth annual Transgender Day of Remembrance, Whitman-Walker Clinic remembers transgender men and women lost to violence and we renew our commitment to bring health care and support services to the transgender community.
“Access to appropriate health care is a tremendous challenge for the transgender community. Too many providers lack basic information about how to properly treat transgender men and women. And far too many may meet transgender patients with fear and prejudice.
“Whitman-Walker Clinic is committed to providing high quality, affirming and competent health care for the transgender community. Our transgender clients can receive hormone therapy with proper monitoring; trans-affirmative gynecological exams, chest and breast exams and STD screening; HIV/AIDS specialty care; individual counseling; and referrals to trans-competent health care providers in the DC metropolitan area.
“We believe that every transgender man and woman has the right to health care and to live their lives in the healthiest way possible. Our services are available to help them live healthy and happy lives.”
Established in 1973, Whitman-Walker Clinic is a non-profit, community-based provider of health care and social services in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. Whitman-Walker Clinic is committed to meeting the life needs of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community and people living with HIV/AIDS.
