MARKS
TRANSGENDER DAY OF REMEMBRANCE
Washington, DC -
Following is the statement of Donald Blanchon, chief executive officer of Whitman-Walker Clinic, marking the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance:
“On this eighth annual Transgender Day of Remembrance, Whitman-Walker Clinic remembers transgender men and women lost to violence and we renew our commitment to bring health care and support services to the transgender community.
“We believe that transgender men and women not only have the right to equal treatment under the law, but the right to competent and sensitive health care. Transgender men and women should not have to fear going to a doctor’s office. They should be welcomed by medical professionals who understand their unique health care needs and provide them with appropriate care.
“That is exactly the kind of care transgender men and women can receive at Whitman-Walker Clinic. We offer primary medical care, regardless of HIV status or sexual orientation, to the transgender community in an affirming atmosphere. Our transgender health services also include hormone therapy, medical screenings and mental health services.
“Whitman-Walker Clinic is committed to ending discriminatory treatment for transgender men and women and to ensuring access to the health care they need and deserve.
