WHITMAN-WALKER CLINIC SELECTS
CAPITAL PRIDE ALLIANCE AS NEW ORGANIZER OF CAPITAL PRIDE
Alliance Will Take Full Responsibility for Pride in 2009
WASHINGTON - Whitman-Walker Clinic has chosen the Capital Pride Alliance, an organization founded by current members of the Capital Pride Committee, as the new organizer of the annual Capital Pride festival.
“After extensive reviews and interviews with the four organizations who applied to take over Pride, the board of directors felt that the Capital Pride Alliance had the proposal that would ensure the most successful transition,” said ReGina Newkirk, Director of Development, Communications and Community Relations for Whitman-Walker Clinic. “As current members of the Capital Pride Committee, they have extensive experience in organizing the event and presented a detailed, long-term plan to make sure the event is successful in the years to come. The board congratulates them and the other three applicants who submitted great proposals.”
Whitman-Walker Clinic will remain as the financial and legal steward of the Pride festival in 2008, with the Alliance taking this year to learn about the internal operations of organizing Pride, including financial management, obtaining sponsors, promotions and advertising.
“This year, many of the functions that were previously done by Whitman-Walker Clinic staff have been transitioned to the Pride committee,” said Newkirk. “However, there are still numerous functions that the Capital Pride Alliance will need to learn and understand in order to transition Pride to them. Our staff will work closely with them to ensure that occurs.”
Whitman-Walker Clinic plans to continue its role as a Community Partner for Pride in the future.
“We will certainly be actively involved in all future Pride festivals as a Community Partner, supporter and participant,” said Newkirk. “We look forward to working with the Alliance to ensure that LGBT health issues are showcased at the festival and that all participants have an opportunity to learn about their health and the services Whitman-Walker Clinic can provide to them.”
