WHITMAN-WALKER CLINIC’S BREAST HEALTH INITIATIVE RECEIVES ADDITIONAL FUNDING

Grant Will Enhance Program that Serves
Lesbians and Bisexual Women

WASHINGTON - The Breast Health Initiative of Whitman-Walker Clinic’s Lesbian Services Program (LSP) has been awarded a $75,000 grant from Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

The Breast Health Initiative provides breast examinations, mammograms and information on breast cancer to lesbians, bisexual women and transgender people throughout the DC metropolitan area.

“We are thrilled to receive this funding,” said Annie Shaw, director of Whitman-Walker’s Lesbian Services Program. “This is such a critical issue for women’s health. It is vital that we reach out to these underserved communities with information, examinations and medical care.”

Susan G. Komen for the Cure seeks to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by providing funds to advance research, education, screening and treatment.

The Lesbian Services Program of Whitman-Walker Clinic is the only provider in the DC metropolitan area that offers medical and behavioral health care services that specifically address the needs of lesbians, bisexual women and transgender people, although all women can receive services.  LSP provides low-cost, high quality direct services, including primary medical care, individual and group therapy, peer support and health education seminars.

Established in 1973, Whitman-Walker Clinic is a non-profit, community-based provider of health care and social services in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. Through sites in the District of Columbia and Northern Virginia, the Clinic offers primary medical and dental care; mental health and addictions counseling and treatment; HIV education, prevention and testing; legal services; case management; and a food bank. Whitman-Walker Clinic is committed to meeting the life needs of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community and people living with HIV/AIDS.
