‘BREAST-A-PALOOZA’ TO RAISE AWARENESS OF BREAST CANCER AMONG LESBIANS AND BISEXUAL WOMEN
Whitman-Walker Clinic’s Lesbian Services Program Organizes Three Days of Events
Washington – The Lesbian Services Program of Whitman-Walker Clinic will launch “Breast-a-palooza” on Thursday, Oct. 12, for three days of events to promote breast cancer awareness for lesbians and bisexual women. Breast-a-palooza is a program of the Breast Health Initiative, which provides top-quality clinical breast exams by licensed health care providers, access to mammograms and health education workshops.
All Breast-a-palooza events take place at the Lesbian Services Program offices, 1810 14th St., N.W., unless otherwise indicated. Those interested in attending should call 202-797-3580. The events include:
- Thursday, Oct. 12 - Breast self-exam seminar.
- Friday, Oct. 13 - Movie night at Lesbian Services Program.
- Saturday, Oct. 14 - Breast-a-palooza brunch at Lesbian Services Program offices; "Bar, Breasts and Burlesque!" at the Phase, featuring performances by the DC Gurly Show at 7 p.m.
In addition, the Lesbian Services Program is organizing “If These Breasts Could Talk,” an exhibit of original artwork, bras and statements from women about their breasts and what they mean to them.
“Lesbians and bisexual women are often underserved when it comes to health care,” said Annie Shaw, director of the Lesbian Services Program. “And what health care they do receive is often not sensitive to their sexual orientation. We provide a welcoming, affirming atmosphere for women to receive the care they need. Breast-a-palooza is one way to reach these women and let them know we are here for them.”
