LEGAL SERVICES

Interning with the Legal Services Program

The Whitman-Walker Clinic legal services program accepts four full-time 2L law student interns for the summer and two part-time 2L law student interns for the fall and spring semesters. Our interns’ work experience includes direct client casework, research projects and writing assignments. In addition, interns may work directly with our senior attorneys, researching facts and issues for potential impact cases. We assign interns to serve as "attorneys on call" under staff attorney supervision, in which capacity they perform client intake, schedule clients for legal clinics, and research and answer clients' legal questions. Finally, interns perform substantive research for our program's two main legal reference sources: AIDS Advocacy (a comprehensive practice manual) and the Public Benefits Manual. We use these manuals to recruit, train and mentor volunteers, and to advise clients who call our program.

If you are interested in interning with us, please apply early. We receive many applications from highly qualified law students from throughout the country each year and we try to make our hiring decisions well in advance of the internship period. Suggested dates for submitting internship applications: fall internships – apply by April 15; spring internships – apply by November 15; summer internships – apply by February 15. Note on summer internship hiring: We highly recommend that law students who are interested in summer internships with us attend the Equal Justice Works Career Fair, typically held in Washington, D.C., during October. We make a significant number of our summer internship hires through the Equal Justice Works Career Fair because it gives us an opportunity to meet with a large number of students early in the year. For more information about the Equal Justice Works Career Fair, visit www.equaljusticeworks.org.

Applicants must have an interest in AIDS law and issues affecting the GLBT community and good oral and written communication skills. To apply, please send a cover letter, resume, and writing sample to Todd Pilcher, Senior Managing Attorney, Whitman-Walker Clinic Legal Services, 1701 14th St., NW, Washington, DC 20009, 202-939-7627, 202-939-7651 (fax), tpilcherwwc.org.
