The Elizabeth
Taylor Medical Center of Whitman-Walker Clinic is a state-of-the-art
outpatient medical facility. The professional staff and
numerous medical and clinical volunteers deliver high-quality
primary medical care, HIV/AIDS-related care and culturally
sensitive gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender health
care. The HIV clinic provides comprehensive medical evaluations,
primary medical care and treatments for HIV disease and
other illnesses.
Services include:
- Primary medical care, including preventive health care, annual physical and gynecological exams, sick visits, chronic disease management, pregnancy tests and specialty consultations and referrals.
- The HIV clinic provides comprehensive medical evaluations, primary medical care and treatments for HIV disease and other illnesses.
- Our dental unit provides full dental services including cleaning, x-ray, diagnosis, treatment and assistance with nutritional planning.
- Pre-natal and post-partum care for low-risk pregnancies and referrals to obstetricians or perinatalogists for high-risk pregnancies.
- Pediatric care, including preventive care, vaccines, urgent care and referrals for specialized care.
- A pharmacy where individuals may obtain HIV-related medications at or below cost. In 2006, the pharmacy filled more than 22,500 prescriptions.
- Gay and lesbian health and wellness services in a supportive and culturally sensitive environment. Services include mammography screenings, gynecological exams, sexually transmitted disease screenings, a full array of professional psychotherapy and counseling services, and crisis intervention.
- Transgender health services that include trans-affirmative gynecological exams, STD screening, and chest and breast exams, chest and breast self-exam instruction, testosterone therapy for female-to-male clients, including blood work and medical examinations, and hormone therapy for male-to-female individuals.
- The Ray
Engebretsen Clinical Investigations Unit that provides cutting-edge medicine and treatments to Whitman-Walker Clinic patients at little or no cost through a variety of pharmaceutical investigations. The unit also plays an important role in research for effective treatments for HIV/AIDS.
- A medical laboratory that provides an array of tests, including CD4, blood chemistry, viral load, syphilis, hepatitis chlamydia, gonorrhea and Pap smears.
- The HIV
Testing and Counseling
program is the largest in the Washington area, currently
testing more than 10,000 people in 2006 at three Clinic
medical facilities and off-site through our mobile HIV
testing van. Whitman-Walker Clinic screens for HIV using
the OraQuick test, a test that delivers results in 20 minutes
