GROUP FAQs
Groups? What groups? I did not know WWC
had support and therapy groups.
You do now! And they are
easier than ever to find on the web site!
WWC seems so big! Whom do I call?
Easy! Look for the person listed as the contact person
for the group you are interested in and call or e-mail them.
I saw a group for me: "Stress Reduction."
Oh, yes, I've got stress! How do I know the group is right
for me?
If the title isn't enough, try reading the description
of the group. Still not sure? You can call or e-mail the
contact person listed.
Drop-in, Therapy, Support, Psycho-educational. What do
all of these group types mean?
The groups at WWC are categorized according to the purpose
of the group. The following definitions are helpful in distinguishing
between the different types of groups:
Drop-in- The purpose of this
group is to provide support and an opportunity to socialize.
Support- This group will help you
cope with or adjust to a particular stressor in your life such as illness, relationship breakups or coming out.
Psycho-educational- This group will
teach you new information or help you develop new skills. Topics include: stress reduction, nutrition and HIV, dating
in the gay community or recovery from substance abuse.
Therapy- A therapy group is designed
to help remedy a specific mental health problem.
Need more
information? Call or e-mail the contact person listed.
I don't have much money. How much does
it cost?
As always, WWC is committed to providing quality care
regardless of your ability to pay. Look for the information
following each specific group. You will see the following
three categories:
Co-pay/sliding scale-If you have
insurance we accept your co-pay. If you do not, we have
a sliding fee scale. During your intake appointment, you will
meet with our Financial Counselor to determine the fee.
Donations requested-These groups
do not require a donation, but we sure would appreciate it!
Donations accepted- These groups don't
even ask for your money, but will gladly accept it!
Alright, I'm ready! What's next?
Look at the information under the group listing. What
does it say?
Just show up? Call for directions!
Screening required? Call for a quick
and easy telephone screening to make sure the group is right
for you.
Assessment by WWC? Call to make an
appointment with one of our clinicians. You will then have
a "Lead Clinician" who will ensure the group meets
your needs.
Whitman-Walker Clinic has lots of buildings.
How do I know where and when the groups are?
WWC has three main locations: Northwest and Southeast
Washington DC and Arlington, Virginia. The groups meet in
a variety of locations including WWC buildings and local churches
and community centers. The group listing gives you a general
idea of where the groups are and what time and day they meet. The
contact person listed can give you more specific information.
